What this page covers

Cookies are small pieces of information a website can store in a browser. Websites can also use other browser storage, including Local Storage. This page distinguishes the authentication cookies used for administrator access from the Local Storage identifier described for the site's analytics setup. Local Storage is not a cookie, but storing or accessing information there can be subject to similar rules about permission.

This information concerns smallplotgarden.site. The site uses WordPress and is hosted by Contabo. Public forms, comments and advertising are disabled. Those facts do not, by themselves, establish which storage technologies a visitor's browser will encounter on every page.

Administrator authentication

Cookies are used for administrator sign-in. They support access to the administrative area rather than advertising or public comment features. Authentication storage needed to provide a sign-in requested by an administrator may be treated differently from optional tracking, but that does not make every cookie or storage item on the site necessary. The precise names, expiry periods and settings of the administrator cookies have not been supplied.

Analytics and Local Storage

Self-hosted Kantan Analytics is described as being connected during the site's installation. The stated analytics categories are visits, pages viewed, sources, countries, devices, clicks, scrolling and conversions. The setup uses random identifiers in Local Storage, rather than analytics cookies, and does not store IP addresses in analytics statistics. External webhooks are disabled. These details describe the supplied setup; they do not establish whether analytics is already active for every visitor or how each recorded category is derived.

Detailed analytics records are kept for 90 days; aggregates and summaries may be kept longer. No expiry period for the Local Storage identifier has been supplied. Removing it from a browser may remove that browser's stored identifier, but it does not erase records already collected. Browser settings can also block or clear site storage; doing so may affect functions that rely on that storage, including administrator sign-in where relevant.

Permission and choices

An analytics identifier in Local Storage is still a storage technology. Whether permission is required for a particular use depends on its purpose, configuration and any applicable exception; analytics cannot be assumed exempt simply because it is self-hosted, avoids analytics cookies or omits IP addresses from statistics. Where permission is required, it should be obtained before the relevant information is stored or accessed. Merely browsing the site is not consent to optional tracking.

No consent interface or other on-site analytics choice mechanism has been specified. We therefore cannot describe a site control for giving, refusing or withdrawing permission, or claim that such a control is already in place. If permission has been given, it must be possible to withdraw it as easily as it was given. Browser controls can limit future storage and delete information held in that browser, but they are not necessarily a substitute for a required site-level choice or for a request about information already collected.

Server records and other services

The server maintains technical logs. Their retention periods and conditions for data transfers have not been confirmed. Server logging is distinct from placing an analytics identifier in Local Storage, even though both may involve information about a visit. No advertising is used, and no public forms or comments are available. That does not establish that the site has no other cookies or browser-storage items: a complete inventory, including names, purposes, providers and lifetimes, has not been supplied.

Questions and updates

Jack Banks can be contacted at hello.smallplotgarden@gmail.com about the storage described here, including questions about analytics information or a request concerning your data. If the analytics installation, browser-storage settings or available visitor choices change, this information should be checked against the technologies actually operating on the site.

Visitor statistics — Kantan Analytics

We use self-hosted Kantan Analytics to understand visits: pages, traffic sources, approximate country, device and browser, clicks, scrolling and paths through the site. The plugin uses browser Local Storage for random visitor and session identifiers, rather than analytics cookies. A separate first-party preference cookie can exclude the site owner’s browser from analytics for one year. Automation checks may set a session preference cookie to exclude technical visits. IP addresses are processed for country lookup and abuse prevention but are not stored in Kantan statistics. Detailed records are retained for 90 days; aggregates, summaries associated with random visitor identifiers and conversion records may be kept longer. Forwarding conversions to external services is disabled. For questions or requests, use the operator contact details on this page.
